Governor Daugaard Award Five Community Development Block Grants

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has awarded more than $1.2 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) fund to five projects throughout South Dakota. Aberdeen, Fort Pierre, Huron, Mellette and Philip will use the approved monies to help fund projects totaling almost $2.3 million.

"As part of the Governor's Office of Economic Development's Bulldoze, Build and Beautify (BBB) program, a portion of this round of funding will assist communities in removing diliapidated and blighted properties that pose a risk to the community's health and safety," said Gov. Daugaard. "Our funding programs assist a lot of people, but the programs that have the greatest impact are those that improve the quality of life for our residents, and I'm please that through this round we're able to do that again."

The CDBG awards include the following:

  • The City of Aberdeen will use a $9,770 grant to assist with the removal of a dilapidated home.
  • The City of Fort Pierre was approved for a $89,292 grant to remove eight dilapidated homes.
  • The City of Huron was approved for a $13,112.50 grant to assist with the removal of a dilapidated home.
  • The City of Philip will use a $765,000 grant to make improvements to the city's wastewater system.
  • The City of Mellette will use a $323,060 grant to help construct a new community center building.

The City of Waubay also received approval to amend its April 2016 award to increase the amount available for needed improvements to its wastewater treatment facility. Based upon further review of the project and associated costs, GOED approved an additional $250,000 in funding bringing the total grant award to $765,000.

CDBG program provides local governments with funding to complete projects that improve living conditions. The CDBG program is funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by the Governor's Office of Economic Development.
